WORLD’S LARGEST CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES PROGRAM
Ottawa Chamber Music Festival Passes and Tickets on Sale May 27
Ottawa -- The award-winning Ottawa Chamber Music Festival announced today the confirmed program for the 1999 season. Tickets and passes will go on sale May 27th.
The Festival’s tremendous expansion has made the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival the largest chamber music event in the world today. It will present 84 concerts from July 24 to August 7.
“It’s the most ambitious Festival to date,” says Artistic and Executive Director Julian Armour. “Every year we’ve worked to increase the depth and scope of the programme. We’re thrilled with the calibre of artists we’ve been able to book this summer.”
The Festival opens with a performance by world-renowned violinist Cho-Liang Lin on July 24th. Other artists to watch for include Piano Six, pianist Anton Kuerti, violinist Martin Beaver, soprano Donna Brown, and a new ensemble that includes Andrew Dawes of the Orford Quartet, the O’Riley, Dawes, Katz Trio. The event closes on August 7th with popular Festival veterans the Tokyo String Quartet, accompanied by Ottawa favourite, flutist Joanna G’froerer. Ottawa audiences will also be pleased to hear that Juno award-winning baritone Gerald Finley and pianist Angela Hewitt will perform at the Festival.
On July 25th, the Kronos Quartet is scheduled to perform. The first Ottawa appearance for the innovative Quartet is anticipated to have an enthusiastic response from their many devoted fans. Dedicated to experimentation, the Kronos Quartet have introduced new music and composers to an international audience numbering in the millions. Their recordings have received Grammy, Edison, and Deutscheschallplatten awards.
The Festival works on a pass system that encourages patrons to be adventurous and explore the wide variety of repertoire and performers, for a very reasonable cost. Passes cost $40 for adults and $15 for students. Some concerts also require an additional “pass-plus” ticket. Tickets for individual concerts may also be purchased.
Tickets may be purchased from the Festival Office at 66 Slater Street, 2nd floor (613) 234-8008, or from retailers HMV Sparks, Rideau, St Laurent, Place d’Orleans, and Bayshore; CD Warehouse at Clyde and St. Laurent; the Book Bazaar; Compact Music; Domenic’s Music; Lauzon Music; Place Bell Books; the Bank of Nova Scotia at Elgin/Frank; and Ticketmaster.
Most concerts take place in historic churches in downtown Ottawa, all chosen for their superb acoustics. Concerts take place throughout the day, from early morning “coffee concerts” at
10:00 a.m. to late night concerts at 11:00 p.m. Other concert time-slots include 12:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m., and 8:00 p.m.
This year, the Festival continues its tradition of taking part in the Governor General’s Summer Concerts with free outdoor concerts by the hugely popular Quartetto Gelato on July 25th and the Rideau Lakes Brass on August 1st.
In April 1999, the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival made history by being the only North American organization invited to participate in the formation of a new European Centre for Chamber Music, an indication of the interest the Festival has generated world-wide. Julian Armour was the Festival’s representative in Paris, France, for the conference.
